Vegan Moral March on Raleigh

Vegan Moral March on Raleigh - Hosted by Vegans for Peace
Vegans for Peace:
Our biggest and most exciting event of the year!
This will be the third year we participate in the “Mass Moral March” in downtown Raleigh. Organized by the NAACP and supported by a coalition of over 200 progressive groups, this annual event draws upwards of 10,000 people.
Last year, we had over 150 vegans participate. This year, we expect even more. People from all over NC (and beyond) will be joining us! This event offers us a unique opportunity to stand in solidarity with others who are fighting for basic human rights and environmental justice. At the same time, this is a golden opportunity for us to educate others about animal rights and the devastating environmental impacts of animal agriculture.
We'll meet in front of Living Kitchen, 555 Fayetteville St., at 8:30 a.m. Pre-rally begins at 9:00 a.m. The actual march begins at 10:00 a.m and should conclude by 12:30. Afterward, we'll meet for lunch (location TBD).
We'll carry our banner, wave flags and hold signs with peaceful messages expressing love, compassion and respect for all living beings. In order to have a unified presence, we will be offering discounted Vegans for Peace t-shirts. Signs will be provided. We prefer to have a unified and cohesive presence under the banner of Vegans for Peace.
Last year was a truly exciting and memorable event that helped mobilize our community. Together, we can make this event even bigger as we show NC the beauty and promise of veganism! For a better understanding of what past marches have looked like, watch this video: https://youtube.com/watch?v=zkOP2-9d04o.
If you would like to help organize, please let us know in the comments. We need volunteers to help with photography, video, directing participants/selling t-shirts, point people to direct traffic, organize lunch, etc. If you are in need of a ride or a place to stay, please see the thread in the discussion below. In the coming months, we'll post a link so you can see if a bus is coming from your area. We will do our very best to help everyone make it.
As you're able, donations are appreciated to help cover the cost of signs, rental space for lunch, flags, food, etc: https://paypal.com/us/fundraiser/charity/1593884. If you haven't already, please join our Meetup group and mailing list to stay informed of future events: http://vegansforpeace.org. Our FB group is: http://facebook.com/groups/vegansforpeace
Let's continue to inspire and support one another as we work to lay the foundation for a peaceful, nonviolent world!

CAFOs Have Got To Go!
Organized by North Carolina Farmed Animal Save (NCFAS)
Eastern North Carolina may be the most heavily factory farmed place on the planet. There are over 6500 industrial animal farms in NC. We are second only to Iowa in pig production, raising about 9.5 million pigs per year here. We are the third largest producer in the USA of broiler chickens, having more than 148 million broiler chickens here. Animal agriculture is, in fact, the number 1 source of revenue for our state. As such there is a lot of political will aimed at making life better for animal agricultural interests, and less will towards our beautiful state, our water, our air, and the health of our citizens.
Pigs in NC produce nearly 10 billion gallons of waste per year (NC chickens and turkeys produce another 2 tons). Where does it go? In retention ponds that may leak and overflow during storms. And it is also, quite legally, sprayed into the air over fields, much of it in Duplin and Sampson Counties, which are the most heavily factory farmed counties here. People who live near the sprayfields report respiratory issues, an inability to use their yards and homes. CAFOs harbor many bacteria harmful to humans, and people who work in CAFOs have more MRSA in their nostrils. Their kids do, too.
Wilmington is downriver from these places. As Cape Fear RiverWatch says on their website, "There are more factory farms in the Cape Fear River Basin than any other place on planet Earth. Yes-you read that right. There are over 5 million hogs, over 16 million turkeys, and 300 million chickens produced annually in the Cape Fear Basin."
We know what corporate interests do in our state. Wilmington environmental activists have successfully fought off the construction of the Titan cement factory. They are currently fighting to know what is in our water, and fighting to have abusers held responsible, including Chemours who has put Gen X and other toxic chemicals in the water. We are the right people to go to bat for the battle of our state and our people versus the big animal agricultural interests. CAFOs are no good for North Carolina, or for North Carolinians. One step we can take together now is to stand together in our town and tell people what we know about CAFOs in our state. This is a great first step to making changes here that improve life for many many people, animals, and our beautiful land, waters, and air. Stand with us.
We will stand at College and Oleander with educational signs. We will talk to local media. We will hand out literature to folks who stop to speak to us.
